VERNISSAGE – Royal Academy of Fine Arts MA Costume Design Expo 2020

From a multidisciplinary standpoint, the master projects explore the boundaries of costume design within the media of visual and performative arts. Accompanied by their research, the students aim to shed light on questions surrounding the role of the costume designer in our present moment.

The Master Costume Design of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp attracts students from all over the world. It has a unique profile and explores the borders between costume design and visual arts. The master year starts with a question chosen by the student who develops this subject throughout the year. Research into different arts disciplines is highly stimulated. Concept development, critical reflection, authenticity, and innovation are key elements that are essential to help masters finding their personal signature. The link with performing arts is essential since the presence of the human body is a reference for costume design. The result is a personal project that reflects an autonomous choice by the master. Theatre, dance, performance, photography, film, video, or installation art are possible media to present the work. The staff of the Master Costume Design started consists of Alex Mallems and Myriam Van Gucht, who both combine their teaching job at the academy with their work in the world of performing arts.

De Master Kostuumontwerp van de Koninkijke Academie Antwerpen trekt studenten aan van over de hele wereld. Binnen zijn unieke profiel verkent het de grenzen tussen kostuumontwerp en beeldende kunst. Het masterjaar start vanuit een door de studenten zelf gekozen onderzoeksvraag rond een onderwerp dat gedurende het hele jaar ontwikkeld wordt. Research binnen verschillende kunstdisciplines wordt actief gestimuleerd. Het ontwikkelen van een concept, kritische reflectie, authenticiteit en vernieuwing zijn sleutelfactoren voor de student om zijn persoonlijke signatuur te vinden. De relatie tot het performatieve is essentieel waarbij de aanwezigheid van het menselijk lichaam een referentie blijft voor kostuumontwerp. Het resultaat is een persoonlijk project dat de autonome keuzes van de masterstudent reflecteert.
